PAST EVENTS:


on friday, june 11, 1999 bolt presented version 3.0 of the bolt lounge at ELECTROMECHANIK happening at the Justice League, 628 Divisadero Street in San Francisco. The event also featured experimental electro and dub sounds by NEOTROPIC (Ninjatune) and POLE (Matador). bolt premiered a new visual show using viewmaster projections, video and film/slide compositions. All new material ! In addition, the bureau teamed up with C-TRL to present a gaming installation using a network of Classic Mac SE computers.


on saturday, august 21 and sunday, august 22, 1999 bolt will participate in California Extreme one of the largest Classic Arcade Game Shows in the world. This happens in San Jose, California at a huge secure 20,000 square-foot warehouse at Town and Country Village at 2850 Stevens Creek Blvd., Building 1015 in San Jose on August 21 and 22 10am-10pm

bolt presents a special opening night party MECH 2K on SATURDAY, August 21 from 9pm-?? featuring the jungle continuum with DJs Push (Future Breaks FM, XLR8R, bolt resident), Hak (Solid Grooves, Urban Assault), Jonte (Jungle Life), Syphon (Urban Assault, Vibration) and Symplex (Solid Grooves) with a full-scale bolt lounge featuring projected classic games, MAC-SE network games, a classic home console lounge and projected lightshow. All Ages Welcome. Discounted admission of $12 at the door.

This will be one of the largest classic arcade game shows ever with hundreds of coin-op video arcade and pinball games all set on FREE-play. There will be guest speakers, including the "Origins of Video Games" by bolt, tournaments, as well as vendors, technique sessions and more.

There will be hundreds of coin op games on display, lots of tournaments, a panel/lecture series, and a coinciding video game auction. All games will be on "free-play" so you can play all the games all you want all day long. on saturday, february 20, 1999 the bureau battled electronic wits with another collective of trickle-down electronics artists known as OMNIMEDIA. This happened at blasthaus, in San Francisco. The folks at OMNIMEDIA manipulated, fractalized, decimated, simplified and otherwise re-purposed sounds from classic games like Tron, Defender, Space Invaders, Pong and others and presented a part installation and part collaborative sound score using appropriated electronic sound devices and home-made electronic instruments/devices. bolt presented a visual accompaniment to the soundscape using projection equipment, i.e. slides, 16mm films, film-strip projectors. the bureau participated in a recent show at blasthaus entitled A Low Tech ODYSSEY which featured classic coin-op arcade games from the 70's and 80's. agents installed the bolt cocktail lounge which included several home console gaming devices including 2 brand new Vectrex systems and several cocktail (sit-down) tabletop coin-op games along with Fairchild Channel F, Pong, and obscure Atari 2600 carts. $5 admission allows free gameplay on all machines all night long. The exhibition also included roughly 40 upright consoles from the 70's and 80's courtesy of California Extreme.


the bureau presented the bolt lounge on Friday, december 19, 1998 at an event called ELECTROMECHANIK and featured a live performance by the audio art band CITIZEN BAND. in san francisco.

the bureau premiered the bolt lounge on friday, october 2 at an event called ELECTROMECHANIK which featured members of the early German electro band CAN. this all happened at the justice league, 628 divisidero street near hayes street in san francisco from 9pm - 2am. enjoy the b.o.l.t. lounge with classic video games of the atari, intellevision, colecovision and pong sort. the bureau was invited to participate in ARS ELECTRONICA, the largest and most prestigious art and technology festival in the world. b.o.l.t. was invited by the Time's Up organization and presented the b.o.l.t. lounge September 6, 7 and 8. In addition, the events featured several other artists groups including Triclops (Australian machine artists), Negativland (US based sound artists) and Gordon Monahan (Berlin based sound artist). Stay tuned to the b.o.l.t. site for more documentation on these events including audio and video clips. b.o.l.t. featured film collage by Craig Baldwin (other cinema) and sound collage by DJ pOd (noodle).


Back in May, the bureau was also invited to participate in another event entitled OBSOLETE. the event featured a large "floor-projected" version of PONG with controllers operable by large foot pedals on train tracks. the game/art installation was created by an art/technology collective called TIME's UP. the bureau gave a talk on the early history of the video game including discourse about obsolete media. the bureau was also part of PoP, a very special evening celebrating the opening of a major retrospective of the late artist Keith Haring at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art on friday, may 29th. featured at this full on art and dance music affair were low tech games from the 1980's amidst house beats and and many artistic surprises courtesy of blasthaus events. the Haring exhibit was open limited hours during the event which will go on until 2am. the party was an attempt by SFMOMA to make the connection between Haring's work and club culture of the early 80's which his work both reflected and inspired.
